If you no longer require a domain name, Namhost allows you to submit a cancellation request directly from your client area.
Cancelling a domain removes it from your account and begins the process of releasing it back to the registry before its normal expiry date.
While cancellation may seem straightforward, it is important to fully understand the implications before proceeding.
Before you cancel
A cancelled domain may eventually become available for registration by anyone else. If the domain still has:
- Brand value
- Existing backlinks
- Email usage
- Website traffic
- Customer recognition
another party may register it after release.
In some cases, businesses have lost important domains simply because they were cancelled or allowed to expire unintentionally.
Before cancelling, consider whether:
- The domain may be needed again in future
- Associated email addresses are still active
- SEO rankings still have value
- Existing customers may still use the domain
Sometimes allowing the domain to expire naturally instead of immediate cancellation provides more flexibility.
How to cancel a domain:
- Log in to your Namhost account
- Open the Domains section
- Select the domain you wish to cancel
- Click Request Cancellation
- Choose whether cancellation should occur:
- Immediately
- or at the end of the billing period
- Review the information carefully
- Confirm the request
Important information:
- Domain registrations and renewals are generally non-refundable
- Immediate cancellations begin the release process with the registry
- Release timing depends on the TLD and registry policies
- Some domains may enter redemption or quarantine periods before becoming publicly available again
If you accidentally request cancellation:
- Contact Namhost support immediately
- Reversal may still be possible depending on the stage of the process
Best practice:
Only cancel a domain immediately if you are absolutely certain it is no longer needed. Domains connected to active businesses, brands, or email systems should be handled carefully to avoid service disruption or accidental loss.
